Hey Mason! We've been adding some great new songs lately. Why do you pick those songs in particular?

Because I like them. Haha, just kidding. There is a lot that goes into song selection for our music team. I try to stay in touch with what's happening in the Christian music movement. What are other churches playing? What's hot on Christian radio? Which of these songs make sense when considering our congregation makeup and the resources we have available as a music team?

Once these questions are answered, it's time to dig into the songs from a spiritual level and see what God has to say about them.

What do you look for in songs you pick?

Again, there are several critical factors that qualify a song for consideration at Trinity New Life - or any church, for that matter;

1) Lyrics must be consistent with the Bible.
We can't assume that just because we trust the writer or the publisher that the song is true. We are all prone to mistakes in communication. Also, words sometimes mean different things to different people. As the worship leader, it is my responsibility to make sure that what I am asking our congregation to sing is clear and in-line with the Gospel.

2) Music must be culturally and periodically relevant.
Just because a song is Biblical does not mean it "fits" a specific church congregation. A church with an older congregation might require all hymns. A youth service set would likely include edgier song choices. I also feel it's important to stay current with song choices (i.e. songs written in the last few years). There's nothing wrong with pulling out an old favorite, but I like to use songs that are fresh to the church.

3) Songs must be musically accessible.
This goes for the band and the congregation. If the band is pretty inexperienced, it wouldn't make sense to choose to play the latest Israel Houghton (complex) song. Also, I try and choose songs that are within the sing-ability of the congregation. This is very subjective since some churches can sing almost anything and some struggle with simple melodies.

Hello there!

If you're reading this there's a chance you're planning on attending Trinity New Life Church for the first time this Easter Sunday, and you're checking us out online to see what's up, poke around, see if we're kooky or not, and maybe figure out what you're supposed to wear to church. BTW, the answer to that last one is clothes. Please, no meat dresses, or I'll be thinking about BBQ the entire sermon.

OK, smart guy, what KIND of clothes I wear?

I don't think you can go wrong with cotton; it's a nice, breathable, lightweight fabric and we're in Florida, so it's hot.

Holy cow, are you going to be like this the whole time?

Well, not the whole time, but you can expect a smattering of sarcasm. Honestly, most people will dress in casual weekend attire, so dress how you feel comfortable and you’ll fit right in. I'll be wearing jeans (and a jacket, since it's Easter), if that helps.

Do you have anything for my kids, or will I be trying to shush/bribe them to behave for the service?

No bribery needed! We've got an AWESOME kids' environment called New Life Kids. It's for ages 6 weeks through 5th grade. You can learn more by clicking here. If it is your first Sunday, we encourage you to print out this registration form, fill it out, and bring it with you to save you some time on Sunday morning. For the sake of safety we have everyone fill out the registration the firs time, but you've already managed to get everyone there with minimal food spilled on their clothes and probably don't want to do paperwork with a kid in your arms, so just knock it out now and give yourself time to get some free coffee at the Welcome Table!

You're not going to make me stand up or raise my hand 'cause I'm there for the first time, are you?

Heck no. In fact, we've actually got a really nice gift for you at the Connect Table after the service to say "thank you" for joining us. Any other "what will it be like?" questions are probably answered here.

Should I bring anything?

Well, if you have a Bible, you can bring that, but if you don't have one, we'll be more than happy to give you one.

We're actually very pro-technology at our church, so if you have a smartphone you might want to download a free Bible right now by visiting bible.tnlclive.com on your phone. You'll actually be able to follow along and interact with the message by using the Live feature on the YouVersion free Bible app. Our Live event is already...well, live...so you can figure it out now and be an expert by Sunday.

Superstars, we are just a few days away from our Easter service. I'm going to ask TWO things from you:

1) INVITE ANY AND EVERYONE YOU CAN THINK OF! People are NOT offended when you invite them to an Easter service, so take advantage of it! How can they believe unless they hear?! Get five easy ways to pray and five easy ways to invite right here.

2) If you are not serving COME 10 MINUTES EARLY! Guests usually come early, and to create a great environment for them make 10:20 the new 10:30! Blame it on me if your spouse complains!

3) If you have friends with kids coming with you for the first time, help make their first-time checkin a breeze by have them print and fill out our Registration Form, and bring it with them. Boom! Checked in!

AND PRAY!!! I'm preaching the gospel, I'm asking for responses to salvation, I'm believing to see the kingdom expanded tomorrow. Will you join me?

As we head into the final stretch of our Faith for Five initiative, we're going to take one day (the fifth!) to specifically focus our prayers on our Five, our Easter service, and for our church as a whole. Throughout Scripture we see fasting as a powerful spiritual discipline that grows us closer to God, fans into flames our passion for God, and strengthens our prayers to God (for more info on fasting, download our March fasting guide here).

Fasting usually involves abstaining from food. Some of you may be able to fast the whole day, but we're asking that EVERYONE take AT LEAST one meal and take the time you would have been eating to pray. Let's step out in faith and see Jesus transform hearts and lives!

BREAKFAST PRAYERS

Pray, by name, for all of your five.
Pray all of the prayers found on the Faith for Five Info Sheet.
Pray for the Five of everyone else in the church.
Pray for divine connections and open doors to extend invitations.
Pray for everyone to have the courage to invite people to church.
Pray for open hearts to receive those invitations.
Pray for God to meet each person as they invite, and each person as they're invited.

LUNCH PRAYER

Pray, by name, for all of your five.
Pray all of the prayers found on the Faith for Five Info Sheet.
Pray for the Five of everyone else in the church.
Pray for our Easter service, that every element would be done with excellence.
Pray that the presence of God would be tangible to everyone on Sunday morning.
Pray for the music team, for their rehearsals and songs. Pray they do more than just play, but lead us into God's presence.
Pray for the Connection Team, that they can meet and connect with all of our guests.
Pray for the NLK team, pray that just as much Jesus is in their rooms. Pray the gospel would go deep in the hearts of the kids. Pray the workers have grace to lead and speak the truth of Jesus.
Pray for the Welcome Team, to bring life and joy to everyone they greet.
Pray for the Media Team, that there are no devils in the sound equipment!
Pray for open hearts, for everyone, to see that there is salvation in no one but Jesus
Pray that revelation from the Holy Spirit and the grace to repent are present at the service

DINNER PRAYERS

Pray, by name, for all of your five.
Pray all of the prayers found on the Faith for Five Info Sheet.
Pray for the Five of everyone else in the church.
Pray for us to be a church that worships Jesus in every aspect of our lives.
Pray for us to be desperately seeking Jesus every day.
Pray for marriages to be strengthened. Pray for communication, grace, understanding, and romantic love to be in every marriage.
Pray for families to be brought closer by coming closer to Jesus themselves. Pray for love and understanding between kids and parents. Pray for salvation for each child in every house. Pray for a love of Jesus, not obedience to rules, is placed in the heart of every child.
Pray for healing of physical ailments. Pray that God would transform physical bodies by His power.

ENGAGE YOUR FAITH

Easter is the perfect opportunity to invite friends and family who don’t know Jesus and/or are not part of a local church to join us at Trinity New Life.

We want to help you grow in your faith and see your friends and family come to know Jesus, so we’re challenging everyone to step out in faith to pray for and invite FIVE people to our Easter celebration on April 8th.

What?! Two posts in one week from your ol' Pastor?! 'Tis true!

On Thursdays the plan is to post a resource for you to use to build your faith in Jesus. Sometimes a podcast, sometimes a book, a movie, a shadow puppet manual, whatever's going to get more Jesus in you. So let's go!

First up is a book I'd highly recommend called EntreLeadership by Dave Ramsey. Yes, I know, that's a weird word, but Dave's goal (we're on a first-name basis, can't you tell?) is to combine and highlights the best qualities of both an entrepreneur and a leader, the type of people he looks to fill his organization with.

While Dave Ramsey is traditionally known for his financial resources, tv show and radio show, he's also been teaching leadership in business and conference circles for quite a while, and obvious why when you read the book.

A mix of leadership philosophy with a generous heaping of practical wisdom, the book itself is just like the idea of an EntreLeader itself: attempting to pull together two ideas and present the best of them for maximum effectiveness, and I believe he achieves this in his first leadership book. While some of the practicals are ahead of my leadership situation, they were fantastic primers for when we're in a situation of not just managing great volunteers but managing great staff members.

I'd highly recommend this for those both inside and outside of ministry, especially anyone leading a small business.

Last week my friend Jay Hardwick wrote  a PHENOMENAL blog about how each and every single person *can* play a crucial role not only in the Sunday service, but the life and future of the church. With his permission, here's his totally ripped-off blog post, adjusted for our church:

Over the last several weeks, we’ve seen a surge in the number of first time guests attending [Trinity New Life Church] on Sundays. This is an exciting trend and one that we want to see continue. One of the best ways to see the trend continue is to go over the top to serve our guests well and make it easy for them to get connected.

Every week is somebody’s first week…and every somebody has a story. We have no idea what is going on or what God is up to in their lives. We just know they are with us and now we have an opportunity to be a part of what God’s work.

The critical question for us to answer is, “Will we serve or ignore our guests?“

Here are a few ways we all can be involved in serving our guests well:

Be a “guerrilla greeter”. You don’t have to be an official member of the “greeter team” to greet new people. As you walk in the building, get coffee, check-in your kids, and sit in the auditorium, look for AND speak to new people. A simple hello, welcome, and introduction of yourself can go a long way.

Offer a hand. If you see a family with small kids coming in with arms full of bags, jackets, etc., offer to carry a bag. If it’s raining, share your umbrella. If you see people who are unsure of where to go, walk them to the place they are trying to find.

Scoot in. ...As you find a seat in the auditorium, scoot to the middle of the row to make it easy for late arrivers and for guests to find a seat on the ends of the rows.

Come expectant and fully engage. One of the greatest proofs of the power of the gospel is our engagement in worship. Every Sunday when we gather for worship, we should come expecting God to move in our lives. This expectation leads us to fully engage – to be on time, to sing with passion, to receive the Word with gladness, and to respond to God in worship.There is no more powerful apologetic than God’s people passionately engaged in worshiping Him.

Minimize distractions. Do everything you can to keep distractions to an absolute minimum. Visit the restroom before the service, arrive on time, stay to the end of the service, etc.

Walking into a church for the first time can really be a terrifying experience. We want to do everything we can to help our guests have a fantastic experience and most importantly, to experience God at work in their lives.

Every week is somebody’s first week. Every somebody has a story. Let’s serve them well and trust God to work!

This past Sunday we announced an opportunity to change your life in less than two weeks by participating in a TEN DAYS mission experience this summer! In case you missed it, TEN DAYS is

...the short-term missions program of Every Nation Ministries, a Christian organization dedicated to church planting, campus ministry, and world missions. Named after the average length of these short-term mission trips, Ten Days was created to help foster a culture of missions within people and within local churches. We believe that when people experience travel and service to the people of another nation, the experience itself is as powerful and permanent as the trip's actual accomplishments. We believe ten days can change your life, your church, and the world.

We are believing for at least SIX people from our church to go on overseas missions trips this summer, to have their lives changed, to change lives, and to come home ready to change lives every single day. Are you one of the six?!

Session 1: Batteries Not Included

Just as Jesus was dedicated as a child, we follow the same tradition and offer parents an opportunity to dedicate their children to God and declare their intentions to raise them in a Godly manner.

WHY DEDICATION?

Children are a gift from God. Psalm 127:3 proclaims, "Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him." As believers we are called to recognize that children belong first and foremost to God. God in his goodness gives children as gifts to parents. You not only have the awesome responsibility of caring for this gift, but also the wonderful privilege of enjoying the gift. Because children belong to God and are given by grace as gifts to parents, it is only proper and appropriate that children be dedicated back to God.

NOT BAPTISM?

It must be stressed that we are dedicating and not baptizing. Jesus himself was dedicated as a child and then baptized as an adult. Baptism is done in response to repentance and faith in Jesus. Dedication is done by the parents and involves making a vow to completely submit their child to the will of God and raise that child in the ways of the Lord.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities God has entrusted to Christian parents include continuously praying for their children (Job 1:5), instructing them in the way of the Lord (Proverbs 22:6), setting a godly example (Proverbs 20:7), and disciplining them as the Lord would discipline us (Proverbs 29:15,17; 13:24). These responsibilities can only be fulfilled in Christ's strength (Philippians 4:13).

Beginning January 23rd, this 6-week course will equip you to grow spiritually and provide you with a solid biblical foundation for your life. It’s also a great way to build relationships with others!

Happy Monday, Super-Church!

We're only a few days away from our big community-wide Christmas service, held December 23rd at 7pm. This is going to be an incredible way to end the year, and a great opportunity for you to engage in one of our core values, Intentional Evangelism. I know many people don't feel comfortable inviting friends to church, so I wanted to take a minute to offer some helpful suggestions:

Use an invite card
Hopefully you picked up some of our Christmas invite cards yesterday at church, because they're a great way to help your friends and family remember the details of the service. An easy way to ask them to come is to simply say "If you don't have any plans already, I'd love to invite you to our church's Christmas Eve service on December 23rd." Perhaps even the fact that it's the 23rd and not the 24th will be a point of conversation. Worst case scenario? They say no. Same result as if you didn't ask. Best case? They come, love it, come back, and they begin a life-long relationship with God. Yep, seems worth it!<

RSVP to the service on Facebook:
Most of you are on Facebook, so we've created an event there for you to use in inviting your friends. RSVP here if you haven't already, and then click the "Invite Friends" button at the top. I would STRONGLY encourage you to add a personal note to everyone you invite, however. The more personal you can make the invitation, the better.

MOST IMPORTANT- PRAY!!!
Church, no amount of marketing and posting will take the place of God working on someone's heart and drawing them to Him. Ask God who He wants you to invite, pray for them specifically, and then invite them! Pray for them daily, pray for their hearts to be open, pray for them to hear from God!

Church, this post and this service isn't about filling a room so that we can feel satisfied and happy with ourselves. This is about doing everything we can, short of sin, to see people come into an environment full of love for Jesus and love for people. This is about seeing people come into an environment where they can hear the message of Jesus Christ.

What could be a better way to end the year?!?

Our Father in heaven, holy is your name

Lord, I pray these attributes of your name today. You are:
>My Savior: Thank you for your cross and your sacrifice!
>My Lord and King: I respect you and love to obey you!
>My Friend: You have made me your heir. I am a child of God!
>My Righteousness: I am in right standing with God because of your blood!
>My Provider: You are my supplier and sufficiency!
>The Healer of my spirit, soul and body: my mind and emotions will serve your purposes today!

And lead us not in to temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
