Matthew 8:23-27

Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples.  Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.  The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Jesus responded,  “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!”  Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”

Mark 4:35-41

As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS

Q: Several times this week, we’ve read about Jesus showing his power on the Sea of Galilee. Since several disciples were fisherman, do you think Jesus was intentionally challenging them in circumstances and situations where their trust was most likely in themselves? Has God ever done this to you? If so, how have you responded in those time?

Q: Does your faith grow when God moves so powerfully in the areas that you are gifted in that you have no choice but to praise Him? Why or why not?

Q: Is Jesus, God, the church, this nice little side thing? A weekend adventure? Or have you turned your life over to Him i such a complete and total way that the foundation source of trust has been transported from what you know and what you can do to whatever He says is true?
