MATTHEW 22: 34-40

The Most Important Commandment
34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. 35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”

37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

When asked what the greatest commandment was, Jesus went straight to the Bible and made it simple: Love God with everything you have and love your neighbor as yourself. We don’t fundamentally have trouble loving ourselves; rather, we have trouble loving others. The truth is that we cannot carry out this command perfectly on our own power. We need the supernatural, grace- infused empowering of Jesus each day to carry this out.

Q: Who did Jesus call us to love perfectly?

Q: Who do you have more trouble loving: God or other people?

Q: How can you practice loving God and others this week: reading and applying the Bible, serving someone, giving sacrificially, or putting aside your agenda to meet the needs of others?
