Ephesians 5:25-30

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.[a] 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. 30 And we are members of his body.

At some point, some of us will be a husband, have a husband, or know a husband, so understanding this passage is crucial! Paul is giving a challenging call to men to love their wives as Jesus loved the church. That’s no small ask. Jesus laid down his very life for the Church. He took responsibility for the Church. Men are called to take responsibility for their wives, even when it’s daunting. This means men are called to sacrifice their time, dreams, and expectations to truly love their wives well.

Q: What does it mean for a husband to lay down his life for his wife? How does understanding this grow your understanding of relationships?

Q: As you reflect on the role of the husband, take a second and reflect on how Jesus is the perfection of that role. How has Jesus been the perfection of that role to you?

Q: What’s one way you can take responsibility for someone else today? How can you serve them in the way that Jesus served the church?
