Devotions for October 11, 2017

22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.

At some point, some of us will be a wife, have a wife, or know a wife so understanding this passage is crucial too! Paul is not telling readers who should make the most money, come home first, cook nightly, do the dishes, keep track of the money, or pay the bills; he is telling readers that ultimately they’re called to trust Jesus. Paul isn’t calling wives to submit to every whim of their husband, but to trust in a husband who has trusted their life to Jesus and is pursuing Him.

Q: How does this passage describe a marital relationship? What does it mean for a wife to submit to her husband?

Q: If you’re a woman, how does this passage grow your understanding of relationships? If you’re a man, how are you pursuing Jesus in a way that makes you worthy of another’s trust?

Q: In relationships we have a choice to make, when it comes to engaging with others, do we choose trust, or suspicion? What’s one way today that you can choose to trust someone rather than being suspicious of them?
