READ

John 16:5-7

“5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

John 7:37-39

“37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

REFLECT

Understanding that Jesus leaving was beneficial for us is tough to ask because it's the last thing we would expect. Jesus had to go to the Father in order to send the Helper or the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. Then those who follow Jesus can truly carry out their God given purpose. In the same way, the Holy Spirit descended onto Christ and remained right before Jesus began His ministry. Jesus submitted himself to His humanity being only in one place at a time. But when He sent the Spirit, that work was carried out in many of His followers and continues now all throughout the world.

APPLY

Q: Why was it better for us that Jesus be raised into glory?

Q: Are rivers of living water flowing from you?(It should be, it was a promise now fulfilled.)

Q: Share this scripture with someone who needs an example of God working things together for our good, even when it may not seem so great at first!

PRAY

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

Father let your will be done! It may look ugly at first, but everything that you start will be brought to completion. Help me trust in you God. Remove the doubt and fear, because that isn't the Spirit you gave us. Let wisdom well up in me and never stop overflowing. By the power of the Holy Spirit I will carry out my purpose. In Jesus' name.
