ACTS 1:4-8
On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

REFLECT
We’re going on a journey through the book of Acts this week to see what it looked like for these believers to be empowered witnesses for Jesus.
That is the goal for us as well. We can be witnesses, sharing our faith, but that’s just in our power and our wisdom, our strength, and comfort. But to be EMPOWERED witnesses? That takes the Holy Spirit’s power.

Q: What were the disciples asking Jesus to come and free? Was it an earthly freedom or spiritual freedom?
Q: What does Jesus tell the disciples they will be when the power of the Holy Spirit comes on them?
Q: Do you ask for more of the Holy Spirit, so that you can be a witness to Jesus? Why or why not?

"Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy."
Father, you are holy and mighty! Thank you for the good gift of salvation and for empowering me through your Holy Spirit. Help me to bear the fruit of Jesus… His compassion, His kindness, His patience, and His endurance for your holy name. Amen.
