ACTS 8:14-19

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

REFLECT

The power of the Holy Spirit can move in mighty ways, and not every example of His power is explained in scripture. Here we see that baptized believers were prayed for. Then, Simon “saw that the Spirit was given…” and asked to buy this power.

We need to remember that the power of the Holy Spirit goes beyond what we can think or imagine and ask ourselves, “do I eagerly desire more?” We must also remember that God’s Spirit bears good fruit and cannot be used for corruption.

APPLY

Q: Why did Simon want to have more of the Holy Spirit?

Q: Peter and John went to where people were accepting Christ’s salvation. Have you put your trust in the gospel of God’s love and salvation for you?

Q: How can you encourage salvation for others as a lead in to the power that the Holy Spirit wants to give all believers?

PRAY

"Give us today our daily bread."

Lord, thank you for providing me with everything I need physically and spiritually! Thank you for the gift of your Spirit. Grow my hunger for you, your Gospel, and for seeing others be fed by your goodness. Amen.
