PSALMS 119:9-16

How can a young person stay on the path of purity?

By living according to your word.

I seek you with all my heart;

do not let me stray from your commands.

I have hidden your word in my heart

that I might not sin against you.

Praise be  to you, LORD;

teach me your decrees.

With my lips I recount

all the laws that come from your mouth.

I rejoice in following your statutes

as one rejoices in great riches.

I meditate on your precepts

and consider your ways.

I delight in your decrees;

I will not neglect your word.

REFLECT

Jesus summarized all of the Bible’s commands into two parts: Loving God and loving your neighbor. This portion of a very long Psalm captures some of what it means to love God. Read over the passage again and note how many times the Psalmist mentions words like mouth, decree, commands, word, etc. There’s something about the voice of God and how it relates to His commands and, ultimately, His heart.

APPLY

Q: How is it possible for someone to “stay on the path of purity” according to the Psalm?

Q: How does hungering for God’s word help orient your heart and life toward Him?

Q: Imagine all believers in Christ rejoicing and delighting in God as the Psalmist describes. How would it change the way others would accept and view the Gospel?

PRAY

"Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy."

Heavenly Father, you are holy, mighty, and pure. Knowing you and your Son Jesus is my greatest privilege. Grow my hunger for your words. Help me to delight in your commands and always place you as my first love. Amen.
