EXODUS 18:14

"14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What
are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?”

REFLECT

God does not want us to bear the burden alone.  When we try to manage more than we have the capacity to we end up not accomplishing much. I love the frankness of Moses’ father-in-law’s question- “What are you really accomplishing here?” When we honestly evaluate the ways we are managing our lives we then can see with clear eyes the quality of our fruit. To evaluate, we can take our model from this verse- first identify the ‘what’. What we want to accomplish versus what we are actually accomplishing. Then identify the ‘why’ behind it.

APPLY

Q: What are the two ways Moses’ father-in-law evaluates Moses’ actions?

Q: What’s your tendency- to reach out for help or try to manage it all yourself?

Q: Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to see what we cannot- who can you ask for an honest appraisal of how you are managing the pressures in your life?

PRAY

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

Lord, the burdens of this life are many. The pressures can feel suffocating- as if we will break beneath the weight of them all. We long for you to return and make all things new and whole. God, we ask you to come. Come and breathe a fresh wind of endurance upon our minds, our hearts, and our lives. We surrender control and lay our troubles at your feet. Thank you for your faithfulness to us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
