1 CORINTHIANS 10:14-17

Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.

REFLECT

Taking Communion together is a group proclamation of Jesus’s death until He returns. It’s also a weekly reminder of our need for each other and our unity in Christ. The only breaking involved in Communion is the bread, which represents the broken body of Jesus. Then, all believers consume it together. The church itself is not broken or divided. Rather, Jesus let Himself be broken for our sake. Communion is a reminder of the sufficiency of Jesus’s sacrifice and His redemption of us all. What a powerful miracle we get to participate in together each week!

Q: Why does Paul compare the images of the “body” and the “loaf” in this passage?

Q: How does Jesus’s sacrifice inspire to care for His body, the church?

Q: Why does the world need to see followers of Christ caring for each other in unity despite our differences?

PRAY

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

Lord, your will is for our healing and wholeness together so we can be a light to the nations. Help me to live for your will as it is in heaven. Soften my heart and lead me in unity and courage by your Spirit. Amen.
