READ

Acts 6:8-10, 7:57-60

8 Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people. 9 But one day some men from the Synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it was called, started to debate with him. They were Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and the province of Asia. 10 None of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke.

57 Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him 58 and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59 As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died.

REFLECT

Stephen was an effective administrator and messenger before becoming a martyr.  He was named one of the food distribution managers in the early church.  He was a powerful, spirit-filled communicator and the first to give his life for the gospel.  But even Stephen’s death had a power and impact on the spread of the gospel.  If we boldly live out our faith, the light of our lives will also have power and impact in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

APPLY

Q: What did Stephen have that the others couldn’t stand against?  (see verse 10)
Q: What areas of your life do you need more of God’s grace and power?  Are you diligently praying for more of the Holy Spirit in your life?
Q: How can you be a role model to others by being a spirit-filled communicator?

PRAY

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

Father God, fill me with Your power so I can make an impact on spreading Your kingdom here on earth.  I need more of your Holy Spirit in me.   Let my light shine so that others will see You in me.  Thank you for Your grace and mercy, Lord.
