Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,

for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,

for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

for they will be filled.

REFLECT

This time of year, the holidays, seems to exaggerate our feelings of joy, loss, and fear. You may be looking at your budget and the calendar and thinking, How are we going to make this work? Or maybe you’re in a time of total abundance and financially you’re solid. Either way, this time of year is a beautiful reminder of what blessedness means to us and to our Lord. The above passage comes from a section called “The Beatitudes.” Notice how Jesus takes something valued by the world, like comfort and inheritance, and upends the expectation. Jesus values the poor in spirit and the humble.
