READ

Deuteronomy 8:3-5
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.

Matthew 4:1-4
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

REFLECT

We tend to expect God’s provision to look like overflowing comfort and abundant provision. But Jesus—and God’s people in general—faced seasons of hunger and isolation. It’s in these moments of waiting where God’s faithfulness in the mundane really shows up and takes deep root in our souls. God’s faithfulness in the mundane in the past informs our trust in Him today. God used the desert to show how His words ultimately give us life.

APPLY

Q: Why did the Lord test the Israelites in the desert?
Q: What’s a test you’re going through right now? How can you worship and seek God more during it?
Q: What kind of legacy of faith do you want to leave for others?

PRAY

"Give us today our daily bread."

Lord, thank you for your faithfulness! Thank you that Jesus is my bread of life and true provision. Help me to trust in every word you have said. I praise your holy name. Amen.
