Hebrews 6:1-6
1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,

2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

3 And this we will do if God permits.

4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit,

5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,

6 and then have fallen away, to restore them to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their harm and holding him up to contempt.

REFLECT

When you decided to follow Christ, you immediately tipped the scales of the world against you. What was once a decline into ruin has become, not flat, easy ground, but an incline into glory. The process of approaching glory, the climb itself, is spiritual maturity. It is, by necessity, harder to mature than to regress in the same way it is harder to climb a hill than to roll down it. Because your entire life is lived on this incline, there is no safe idle. Like a car ascending a hill, the momentum must be maintained. To stop pressing forward, to give up on spiritual growth and maturity is like putting the car in neutral and taking your foot off the pedal on a steep incline; you will move, but not forward. The kingdom of God is not a decision you made at youth camp, or a prayer you uttered at a rally, it is a proclamation of lost life; it is loyalty to the King of Glory. The great things the Lord has for you are before you and above you, on the incline of spiritual maturity. Do not neglect the climb. Keep going to church, learning, reading, praying, talking to others, etc. This is “going on to maturity.”
