READ

1 Corinthians 3:16-17
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

REFLECT

Paul challenges and convicts the Corinthian church (and all churches!) to live holy lives together. He talks about God’s Spirit dwelling in their midst and uses plural “you” in these passages. As God’s temple together, we are empowered to love each other and live holy lives. Paul mentions specific sins here: Sexual immorality and destroying God’s temple, or the church. In other words, he’s offering these examples to warn us not to damage ourselves or others as the temple of God. Seeing other Christians as part of God’s temple changes how we view them and treat them. Therefore, how can we harm them or our ourselves as God’s temple?

APPLY

Q: Why does Paul emphasize the community of believers, the church, in these passages?

Q: How can you build up, protect, and love someone else in the church today?

Q: People outside the church look to us as examples. How would living as God’s temple together affect how others receive the Gospel message?

SING

PRAY

"Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us."

Lord, thank you for dwelling in me and in my church! Forgive me for sings of jealousy, lust, ego, and anything else which has harmed your temple. Father, lead me by Your Spirit. Help me to grow a bountiful harvest of love, joy, self-control, and other gifts of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
