READ

PSALM 19: 1-6

1 "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.

2 Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known.

3 They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard.

4 Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.

5 It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race.

6 The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat.”

REFLECT

In the movie Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddel famously said “I believe that God made me for a purpose… But he also made me fast. And when I run, I feel his pleasure.” He went on to win a bronze medal in the 200m and a gold in the 400m sprints in the 2024 Olympic Games. Not many of us are born to run as Olympic gold medalists. But when we consider people like Eric Liddel, we catch a glimpse of what God sees in his creation as captured in Psalm 19:5 - The sun bursts forth like a great athlete eager to run the race! Some people absolutely love sunrises, waking early in the morning to watch the sun peak over the horizon and then burst onto the scene. When we watch a sunrise or an Olympic sprinter burst from the starting blocks, we are invited to join God in delighting in his creation as a source of deep and satisfying joy.

APPLY

Q: What can you learn about God from looking at a sunrise? At a starry night sky?

Q: When was the last time you spent even 5 minutes looking up at the stars on a clear night? Select a day right now to do it this week!

Q: Nothing can hide from the sun’s heat, and nothing can hide from God’s love. Who in your life needs to be reminded that God loves them right now with a burning passion?

SING

PRAY

"Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy."

Lord, the heavens proclaim your glory. Open my eyes to see more of you in creation today, to see your goodness and your joy in the way that the world is designed to function, and to rejoice with you.
