Philippians 4:8-9

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Paul endured. He was shipwrecked, abandoned, beaten, and jailed. But his circumstances couldn’t stop his ultimate passion for sharing the Gospel with the world. How can someone find such deep joy in their lives despite the hardship? A key phrase Paul uses in this passage is “put it into practice.” The peace of God doesn’t come by accident. Rather, it comes through a life of trusting in Jesus, imitating the faith of mature believers, and passing on what is good to the next generation.

Q: Why do you think Paul tells you to think on what is true, noble, righteous, pure, lovely, and admirable?

Q: What is consuming your thoughts and causing anxiety in your life? How can you flip the script on those things today?

Q: Who’s life of faith has inspired you and how can their example encourage you to pour into someone else’s life?

Lord thank you for surrounding me with others who love Jesus. Thank you for the words of life, the saints of old, and your Son who intercedes for me at this moment. Help me keep my heart and eyes on you today. Amen.

1 Peter 5:6-11
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of suffering. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

A boxer faces her opponent alone. Blows land on her side and face, and when the round is over she sits in her corner. Her coach attends to her, icing her bruises and stopping blood. The coach encourages her until the bell rings and it’s time to fight again. No matter how much her coach just helped her, she has to return to the blows of her opponent alone. Praise God, though, we have Him in our corners and in the ring walking with us. We do not face trials alone. Peter’s encouraged the church during a time of intense persecution. He portrayed God as their mighty warrior who cared for them deeply, carrying them through their trials and restoring them.

Q: Scan the passage again. What are the various commands Paul gives the reader?

Q: How can you be more alert and humble today as you walk with God?

Q: Pray for someone else today who is going through something severe. How can you also practically care for them?

"Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us."

Father, forgive me for my pride. I rely on my strength too much. Lord, humble me and help me grow more in the fruits of your Holy Spirit. Help me to be gentle of heart and gracious like your Son. Amen.

Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

The secret of true joy is right in front of us. It doesn’t take a self-help influencer, an expensive program, or the energy of others. God provides joy during your most challenging days. And joy also takes a choice. It’s not passive according to Scripture. Note how Habakkuk declares “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD” and how Paul exhorts the church to pray “in every situation.” This means joy won’t come accidentally. Rather, it comes by abiding in Jesus every day. 

Q: What ultimately guards your heart and mind?

Q: What are you anxious about lately? Choose to rejoice and bring your burdens to God in prayer today.

Q: You’re also meant to pray and rejoice in community. Who’s one brother or sister in Christ you can connect with today?

"Give us today our daily bread."

Lord, you are my delight and joy. Thank you, Jesus, for being the bread of life and all that I need. Amen.

Philippians 3:17-21
Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Moana 2 recently hit the theaters. It features a Polynesian way-finder, an adventurous woman who sails across the ocean to find other people. During her adventures, she uses key stars in the night sky to stay on course. Yes, there are interruptions along the way, from creepy sea creatures to fun sidekicks. But those stars keep her on track. Imagine if Moana had used a nearby cloud or landmark to find her way. They’re close by and easy to see, but they move. They would’ve thrown her in the wrong direction. Likewise, Paul calls you to keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and those who model Christ-likeness. Just as a ship would crash with the wrong waypoint, Paul admonishes Christians to not fix their lives on temporary things. Paul has a long view of Jesus, our enduring hope.

Q: Reread the end of the passage above. What is Paul eagerly waiting for exactly?

Q: How can you shift your eagerness and hope more on the coming Messiah?

Q: How will your family, friends, and church benefit from your example when your eyes are set on Jesus?

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

Lord, I praise you that I can experience the power of your resurrection today! And I also look forward to the day when you come again and restore all things, including my body. Lord Jesus, I pray for your will in my life. Help me to focus on your coming kingdom today. Amen.

Philippians 4:10-13
I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

What are some ways our culture tries to handle everyday life and heartache? From speaking positive affirmations to receiving good vibes, it seems our culture has embraced a self-focused spirituality. This is why it’s so important for you as a Christian to turn to the real truth, the real foundation for having hope — Jesus Christ. People are hurting and longing for answers in an uneasy world. You have the opportunity to have real contentment, a real hope, they can see in you, regardless of your situation.

Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” 21 Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?”

Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”

“Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.”

One of the greatest responses we see in scripture is this moment that Jesus has with Peter. It’s straight to the point. Peter has been distracted by John and playing the comparison game. Jesus is quick to respond and set Peter straight. Maybe you have been distracted by what someone else is accomplishing or doing. Maybe you have let yourself be hindered by their walk and their pace in the walk. I think Jesus would say to you, “What is that to you? As for you, follow me.” All God wants is Your heart! Let Him set the pace for your journey and go after it with everything you’ve got.

Lord, it is so tempting to compare my race with others. I know it’s a tool of the enemy and I pray that I will no longer be distracted by it. May I simply follow You and Your heartbeat for my life? May I stay in sync with Your rhythm and let You set the pace of my life’s journey.

“Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time.”

It is a high honor to be called a servant of the Lord. It’s a title reserved for you as a son and daughter of the King. It’s a privilege. And with any privilege comes a great responsibility. You are called to be kind even when others are unkind. You are called to teach through difficult circumstances and carry a teachable heart. You are called to be patient with those who don’t always deserve your patience. You are called to let go of petty things and live to please the Lord alone. It’s a high calling that is worth your attention. A calling that sets you apart from the riff-raff of this world and gives you a purpose beyond this earth. Live for eternity and keep your focus on what matters most!

Acts 15:36-41
After some time Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back and visit each city where we previously preached the word of the Lord, to see how the new believers are doing.” Barnabas agreed and wanted to take along John Mark. But Paul disagreed strongly, since John Mark had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in their work. Their disagreement was so sharp that they separated. Barnabas took John Mark with him and sailed for Cyprus. Paul chose Silas, and as he left, the believers entrusted him to the Lord’s gracious care. Then he traveled throughout Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches there.

Proverbs 13:10
“Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.”

Pride can be the greatest obstacle to recovery in our lives. It will keep you from owning your wrongs. It will keep you from seeing the other person’s perspective. It will keep you from experiencing the fullness of God in your life. It will keep you from being productive for the Kingdom of God. It will steal relationships from you and it will kill your joy. Pride leads to destruction but when we kill it, life resumes. A true, lasting, full life in Jesus. A life that has conflicts but finds resolution in the King of Kings!

“Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so stop before a dispute breaks out.”

Ever find yourself in a stupid argument that you know isn’t even worth the breath you are using to argue it? A quarrel that starts from something deep inside of you that you didn’t even know was there? Maybe it calls for a shift in your perspective. Maybe you just need to go back to God for that thing inside of you that longs for an answer. That thing that bugs you and you want relief from. Maybe you just need to experience the Father’s heart for your situation and know that God sees you right where you are at. He will never leave or forsake you. Focus on Him and you can never go wrong!

Philippians 4:2-3
“Now I appeal to Euodia and Syntyche. Please, because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreement. And I ask you, my true partner, to help these two women, for they worked hard with me in telling others the Good News. They worked along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are written in the Book of Life.”

Proverbs 18:19
“An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars.”

A mild disagreement can sometimes lead to a great chasm in a friendship. One has to ask themselves is being right worth the friendship. Is being right worth the energy and time invested to prove it? The best thing we can do when an argument separates us from those we love is to assume the high road. Choose to see things from God’s perspective and catch His storyline for the circumstances in front of you. Maybe the person you are arguing with just needs to be reminded that you still love them, that you still care, that it’s ok to not always get it right, and that you will fight for your friendship because that’s worth it to you.

PHILIPPIANS 3:20-21
But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.

This is a powerful reminder of our dual citizenship as Christians. Regardless of your perspective on the election in November, Paul is reminding Christians from every nation, tribe, and tongue that we are citizens of heaven first. He is reminding us that we have a king, that we have a country, and it is not the United States of America, it is not Mexico, it is not Ghana, it is not the Philippines.  He is reminding us that we have a hope for the future, and it is not universal healthcare. And he is reminding us that the power that will establish this kingdom and fulfill our hopes is the same power that raised Christ from the dead - namely the power of Almighty God.

Q: Where does our primary citizenship lie as Christians?

Q: How does someone become a citizen of heaven? Where can they obtain a passport?

Q: Who do you know in the church that is tempted to believe that we must produce heaven on earth, that a particular nation and/or a particular elected official are the only way to establish the kingdom of God? What would it mean to them to learn that God himself will establish his kingdom?

"And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one."

Lord, I long for you to produce holiness in me. I long for you to establish your kingdom here on earth. I long to see the power of your mighty hand do immeasurably more than all I can ask or imagine. Give me patience to wait for you, and trust to know you will not let me down.

PHILIPPIANS 3:18-19
For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

Christ possessed me… for a heavenly prize… and calls me to press on… and surrounds me with godly men and women as examples… and then we hit this wall. People within the church who are not walking with God. And Paul’s response is to… weep over them??

Q: How do you typically respond to a person within the church who is not speaking or acting in a way that you feel is appropriate?

Q: When was the last time that you shed a tear over the brokenness of another person in our church?

Q: What would loving someone who is hurting look like? Consider reaching out to someone in this situation and reminding them of the kindness of God.

Lord, we started this week reminding ourselves of our imperfections - that we need to be captured by your grace. But we followed it quickly with the reminder that you have captured us, that our past is forgiven and forgotten, and that we are called to press on in our pilgrimage to heaven. Lord, use me today as an instrument of this same beautiful good news for another - that their sins too can be forgiven and they can be made holy by your relentless grace.

PHILIPPIANS 3:15-17

Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. But we must hold on to the progress we have already made. Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example.

Have you ever used the word “rizz” or “gyatt”? If so, you are following someone’s example. Our culture is infatuated with influencers - we give people we have never met the opportunity to tell us what to think and how to live. But Paul had something better in mind for the Philippian church, and for us. He wants us to find people in our communities that are walking with God, and then follow their example. Sounds crazy - giving local people the role of influencer in our lives. But it’s not crazy at all if they are following Jesus!

Q: How do you know if someone is “following Paul’s example?”

Q: Who in your immediate circle fits that criteria? What makes them stand out to you?

Q: What would it look like to intentionally learn the pattern of life of that person? Consider reaching out to them today and asking to get together regularly to learn from one another.

"Give us today our daily bread."

Lord, place people in my life who are following you so that I may learn from them and pattern my life after them. Open my eyes to see the people in front of me that love you and want to walk with you. Give me the humility to learn and then practice what I learn, that I might reflect your character in my daily life.

PHILIPPIANS 3:12-14
 But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

A nearsighted person goes through life unable to focus. The angle of refraction created by the corneal tissue does not focus the light entering the eyeball on the retina, and the result is a view of the world that is decidedly unfocused. But then came Lasik, a surgical procedure to removal precise amounts of tissue and bring the world into focus. Paul is suggesting something similar here - he wants to grow our focus through the removal of something (the past) so we can clearly see something more valuable (the future) and as a result, press on to the end.

Q: How difficult is it for you to forget your past? How can God help with that?

Q: Have you ever felt exhausted trying to finish a task while unable to see the end? Would seeing the finish line help you cope with that?

Q: What is the future that Paul suggests is waiting for us ahead?

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

Lord, our culture is impatient. I am impatient. I want your kingdom to come soon, but the race set before me is often a slower pace and a longer path than I prefer. Grow my faith that you will bring me safely to the end, that I may press on today in following you.

PHILIPPIANS 3:12
I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.

I am not perfect, but I belong to Christ. Say that out loud to yourself. If it is hard to believe you are not perfect, look at yourself more closely. If it is hard to believe you are loved by God anyway, read the bible more carefully. Paul is reminding us in this single verse that we need to hold both of these truths in tension in our lives. The Greek word for “possessed” is Katalambano. Translated literally, it means physically apprehended or captured - I am not perfect, but I have been captured by Christ. And my capture did not lead to imprisonment or condemnation. Oh no! It led to freedom, forgiveness, and restoration!

Q: Have you ever considered yourself to be captured by Jesus?

Q: How would your life be different if you lived as someone captured by Jesus?

Q: Do you know anyone who is living like they are captured by something other than Jesus? What would it mean to them to learn that they have been captured by Jesus and are no longer enslaved to whatever it is they are following?

"Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy."

Lord, I have not lived a life consistent with your holiness, but you still captured me and made me your own. Show yourself to be holy by making me more aware of my imperfections, more awed by your perfections, and more grateful for your amazing grace.

We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!
5 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. 6 I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault. 7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, 11 so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!

Paul tells the Philippians, that he wants to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. He wants to suffer with him, sharing in his death, 11 so that one way or another he will experience the resurrection from the dead. If you agree with Paul and you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then the answer to “Who do you think you are?” should include that you are a Christian, a student, and a teacher.

Q: Will you share what Christ has done?

Holy Spirit, help me guard my heart against the evil one. Send your grace to me. Lord, open my mind as I read Your word, and help me fortify myself against the temptations that take me away from Your love. Most merciful Father, give me the strength to recognize my self-righteousness and to turn from selfish desires that teardown my relationship with You and the people in my life.

Thinking you are being a good person does not make you a God person. Paul gives us a blueprint in Philippians on how to be a God person; death of your old self and faith in the supernatural resurrection of Jesus.

Q: Who do you know who needs to hear about Jesus?

Lord Jesus, I am not worthy of the forgiveness you give to me. There are times that I am blind to the anger in my heart. Open my eyes so that I may unburden my heart from that anger. Soften my heart so that I may treat those who have wronged me with compassion. I humbly ask that you guide me with your counsel. Show me the way to forgive others as you have shown forgiveness to me.

Philippians 3:2-4
"2 Watch out for those dogs, those people who do evil, those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved. 3 For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!

Paul reminds us to watch out for those people who would encourage us to value our own understanding of how to be saved. He proclaims the truth of our faith that we are saved by Jesus.

Q: Are you relying on what Christ Jesus has done for you?

Q: What does it mean to worship by the Spirit of God? Are you doing that?

Q: How do you illustrate worshiping by the Spirit of God to others?

"Give us today our daily bread."

Lord, you are always faithful to me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. Your blessings are overflowing. Even when I am sinful, you bless and keep me. You are my shelter at all times! You provide me with work to feed my body.

Philippians 3:8-9
8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

Paul encourages the Philippians to value knowing Christ Jesus. Further, he instructs them to make room in themselves for faith. What do you think about your own righteousness? Are you zealous? Are you emptying yourself to make room for faith?

Q: Why can you no longer count on your own righteousness?

Q: What is God’s way of making us right with himself?

Q: How can you share faith with others?

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

Father God, I await your kingdom! Jesus, you taught me to pray for the Father’s will when you died for me. Thank you, Jesus! Father, may your will be done in my life.

Philippians 3:4-7
4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! 5 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. 6 I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault. 7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.

Who do you think you are? Without context, this question evokes many feelings; I am being confronted by someone who disagrees with me and need to defend myself or I am being asked to reflect on my sense of self. Re-read the above scripture. Now what feelings does the question evoke in relation to the scripture?

Q: Are you willing to honestly evaluate yourself and your relationship with Christ?

Q: What things did you think were valuable, that you now consider worthless because of what Christ has done?

Q: Will you share what Christ has done?

"Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy."

Hallowed by your name, oh God! My voice sings praise to your name, my lips speak of your holiness, and my heart rejoices when it hears your name, my Lord! Worthy of glory and praise; my soul leaps at the chance to praise you and to spread the good news of your gospel.

Philippians 2:19-30

Paul Commends Timothy
19 If the Lord Jesus is willing, I hope to send Timothy to you soon for a visit. Then he can cheer me up by telling me how you are getting along. 20 I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare. 21 All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ. 22 But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News. 23 I hope to send him to you just as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me here. 24 And I have confidence from the Lord that I myself will come to see you soon.

Paul Commends Epaphroditus
25 Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. And he was your messenger to help me in my need. 26 I am sending him because he has been longing to see you, and he was very distressed that you heard he was ill. 27 And he certainly was ill; in fact, he almost died. But God had mercy on him—and also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow after another.

28 So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you. 29 Welcome him in the Lord’s love and with great joy, and give him the honor that people like him deserve. 30 For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.

This week we have been learning about Timothy and Epaphroditus.  Paul mentored and valued them both.  Paul showed us how important it is to be a learner and a teacher for others in the church and community.  All of us start as learners and through sanctification, we become teachers and leaders.  What is God calling you to become?

Q: What do Timothy and Epaphroditus have in common?

Q: In what ways can you show God you care more for what matter to Jesus Christ?

Q: Who are you a role model for?  Who do you look up to?  Have you taken time lately to thank those who mentor you to be more like Jesus?

"And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one."

God, would You call us to be a Timothy, a Paul, an Ephaphroditus…maybe more than one? Would You open up our hearts, and our minds to receive from You a call to say yes to one of these in some way? Maybe it’s in church to serve or be pouring into, maybe it’s in other places of work and school…but would we say yes. Let us hear Your voice, God. We love you, Lord!

Philippians 2:28-30
28 So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you. 29 Welcome him in the Lord’s love and with great joy, and give him the honor that people like him deserve. 30 For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.

Think about what the world honors today.  People who are intelligent, beautiful, rich, and powerful are just a few that come to mind.  Paul honored Epaphroditus for giving his life for the sake of Christ and for going where others couldn’t go.  We have some amazing missionaries doing this today.  Let’s honor them and pray for more of them.

Q: Are you actively praying for our missionaries today? How can you show them great joy and honor?

Q: We have been praying for countries that need more missionaries and churches planted.  How can you continue this throughout the next week?

"Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us."

Please bless our missionaries, Lord. Bring Your presence to those countries and places that need it. Create a desire in Your people God to go and make disciples of all nations. You Father are what matters in this world. Keep us all focused on You and Your will.

Philippians 2:25-27

Paul Commends Epaphroditus
25 Meanwhile, I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is a true brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier. Look at how Paul describes Epaphroditus to the church. True brother, co-worker, fellow soldier, and messenger are just a few adjectives listed above. How do others in the church describe you? Notice how badly Epaphroditus wants to be with his church family. The members were all knitted together and loved, cared for, and built each other up. Now that’s something I want to be a part of!

Q: What made Epaphroditus special in Paul’s eyes?

Q: How is God using you to expand His kingdom?  Are you connected to the church family?

Q: How can you thank those in the church that are playing an active role in spreading God’s word to our communities?

Father, You always know what we need.  Thank you for the church.  Thank you for Trinity New Life Church.  Thank you for our leaders and for those willing to learn to become leaders.  Help us all knit ourselves together for Your glory and honor.  We praise You, God!

Philippians 2:22-24
22 But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News. 23 I hope to send him to you just as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me here. 24 And I have confidence from the Lord that I myself will come to see you soon.

Paul mentioned in yesterday’s scripture that most believers were too preoccupied with their own needs and cared only for themselves and not for what mattered to Jesus.  Timothy was special though and Paul explained how.  The lesson is clear - don’t let your schedule and concerns crowd out your love and mission to Christian service.

Q: How are you showing your eagerness to fulfill God’s call on your life?

Q: Who can you purposefully mentor to be a leader for Christ?  Who are you actively learning from to be a better leader?

God, there are few workers and much harvesting that needs to be done. Use me to be a leader for others and if I’m not ready to be a leader, teach me how to get there. I want to serve You alone Lord and help advance Your kingdom here on earth. Reveal to me the next steps I need to take.

Philippians 2:19-21

Paul Commends Timothy

Timothy was a younger leader that Paul loved to pour into.  Paul mentored Timothy and trained him to carry on the ministry in his absence.  We need teachers and learners to continue to carry on God’s ministry today.  We all start as learners, but eventually, we need to become leaders and mentor others to follow in our footsteps.  Paul was especially proud of Timothy and that brought him great joy!

Heavenly Father you have brought great leaders into my life and for that I am thankful. Continue to change me from the inside out and teach me how to lead others. I want to bring You joy, God! Give me wisdom and direction on what You need me to do next.
