Genesis 1:1
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

REFLECT

The very first thing God does in the bible is… WORK. The Oxford Dictionary defines the word “create” as both to bring something into existence and to cause something to happen as a result of one's actions. From the very beginning, God brings things into existence and causes things to happen. The story of the universe doesn’t start with meditation or contemplation or even design plans. It starts with WORK.

But even before the work begins, it starts with GOD. The point of our first devotion this week is that God existed before any work was done, and that God is greater than any and every work of creation. Greater than Victoria Falls? Yup. Greater than Mount Everest? Yup. Greater than the Aurora Borealis? Yup. The very first sentence of the bible declares that God is a creator and that he is greater than all of creation.

APPLY

Q: Are you tempted to think that the world around us just came into being over time? What are the implications of this worldview? What would be different if you believed that God was the cause of it all?

Q: When you see a remarkable natural beauty, what would it look like to attribute that beauty to God?

Q: Do you have someone in your life that is inclined to worship elements of nature? What would it look like to lovingly ask that person to consider the cause of that natural element?

PRAY

"Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy."

Lord, you are a God who works. You are not still. You are not silent. Remind me to contemplate you as I behold the world around me today. Remind me that you created everything I see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. Remind me too that nothing you created is greater than you, that you are set apart above your creation, and that you are worthy of my praise today.
