READ

GENESIS 2:1-3
So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.

MARK 1:35-38
Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. Later Simon and the others went out to find him. When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”

But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.”

REFLECT

It’s easy to get into a work, work, work mentality. Especially if you are designed to be a worker bee. However, every worker bee will crash and burn at some point if they do not take the time to rest. Even God took the time to rest after six very full days of work! If He, being all-powerful and limitless chose a day of rest in the week, how much more so do we need it?

Even Jesus demonstrates a life from a rhythm of rest. Moving from space to space of great need and carving out time to just be with His Father. Demonstrating the need for rest and that it will never just come to you, it is something you have to carve into your schedule. Taking time to rest will increase your capacity for joy in your work experience. It will relieve the pressure that builds up and release it so the flow of God’s goodness can flow through you!

APPLY

Q: Have you set aside time in your week to just rest and recover?

Q: What can you do to define a day of rest for yourself, so you can operate more fully in God’s calling on your life?

Q: Do you have someone in your life who needs a gentle reminder to carve out time to rest?

PRAY

"And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one."

Lord, there is a great temptation to keep working and working. At least I can see progress when I’m working. The resting part is hard for me. May I be intentional with it this week so I can operate more fully in the joy You have for me through the work that I do.
