READ

Matthew 27:39-46

"39 The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. 40 “Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!”  41 The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also mocked Jesus. 42 “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! So he is the King of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in him! 43 He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 Even the revolutionaries who were crucified with him ridiculed him in the same way.  45 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, *“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”* which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

REFLECT

This week we are focusing on Psalm 22.  This psalm was written before Jesus was ever born.  What Jesus cries out in Matthew verse 46 is a quote from verse 1 in Psalm 22.  There is an incredible alignment of what happened to Jesus and what David wrote in Psalm 22.  Let this validate that God wasn’t making things up as he was going along.  This was all part of His plan to use Jesus to forgive our sins and carry our burdens.

PRAY

"May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven."

God, in times of suffering sometimes I feel abandoned, but I know You will never abandon me.  Help me come to You when I feel this way, and remind me of Your promise to never abandon me.  Teach me to worship You Lord, even when I am suffering.  Give me wisdom and patience to endure suffering knowing that victory in You will occur.
